The holiday season is in full swing with Christmas and the new year right around the corner. This time can be very fun, magical, and exciting, but for many people, it can also be a time of stress, financial hardships, and depression.
For many people like myself who struggle with mental health issues(or even if you don’t) the holiday season can trigger feelings of anxiety, stress, tension, missing the way things were, and unpleasant memories.
Since television commercials and posts on social media typically encourage us to “shop to find the perfect present” or” tis the season to be jolly” we often feel pressured or feel like something is wrong with us for not feeling”all holly and jolly.”
Here are some ways to make you feel less stressed during all of the hustle and bustle:
-
It is okay to feel how we feel- You aren’t a Grinch for not feeling the spirit or being as into the holidays as everyone else is. Try to not compare yourself/your life to what you see around you and on social media(which can be easier said than done)Try to think of all the good things you currently have.
-
It is okay to grieve- My heart goes out to anyone who has lost and is missing a friend, family member, pet, etc. Please know it is okay to not be okay and grieve. Try to honor the memory of the person and think of the good memories.
-
You are not alone- Even if you are single and not in the” perfect relationship” or have a partner to do holiday activities with. Treat yourself to some shopping or a special gift. You can also make plans with family or friends to do something festive to get you in the spirit and create some wonderful memories.
-
Don’t feel pressure to buy the “perfect gift”- Although showing someone you remembered what they wanted is great, don’t feel pressured or stressed with having to break the bank to do so. Your loved ones will appreciate whatever you can afford to get them(even a card/something handmade) goes a long way.
-
Block out the outside noise- Make the best of the day/how you are feeling and know that it is okay. Take a break from life and social media. Try to spend time with family and friends. Enjoy some Christmas music, movies, snacks, and food.
I hope these tips helped in any way. Please comment, subscribe, and share with a friend/your loved ones. Thank you for all of the support over the past year warriors. Wishing you all a very happy and healthy holiday season and a prosperous new year xoxo
